BASEBALL FAN O'CONNOR CRITICIZES MLB FOR PLAY ON GOOD FRIDAY

Catholic Archbishop John Cardinal O'Connor said
yesterday that he would not attend any MLB games this year
because the league did not cancel games on Good Friday,
according to Gersh Kuntzman of the N.Y. POST. In his weekly
column, Cardinal O'Connor wrote, "I love baseball [but] I
will not go to a game because major-league teams played on
Good Friday. ... Even the stock market closes on Good
Friday. Playing on Good Friday ... cheapens our culture. I
resent it." Joe Zwilling, a spokesperson for the N.Y.
Archdiocese said O'Connor was not advocating a boycott of
the game. All 30 MLB teams played on Good Friday and MLB
Dir of PR Rich Levin said, "We regret that some people are
inconvenienced, but it's impossible to create a 162-game,
30-team schedule without some problems" (N.Y. POST, 4/17).
