A new poll shows that Minnesotans support building a
new stadium for the Twins "if -- as proposed last Thursday
by Gov. Arne Carlson and stadium supporters in the
Legislature -- it would be paid for by income taxes and user
fees closely linked to the ballpark," according to Patrick
Sweeney of the ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS. Results of the poll,
paid for Minnesota Wins, indicate that 77% favor the Carlson
plan. But "on the more basic question of whether they
support or oppose building a new stadium," 59% said they are
against construction, while 23% said they favor it. The
latest polling was conducted Thursday, Friday and Saturday
by Information Specialists Group, a MN-based survey-research
firm. Statewide, 400 Minnesotans were surveyed by phone.
Margin of error is +/- 5% (ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, 11/11).
NOTES: Figures show that Vikings' sales and income
taxes "would initially contribute as much, or more, toward a
new Twins ballpark as would taxes from the baseball team."
Vikings President Roger Headrick: "I don't see the logic or
rationale for using Vikings sources when you're not prepared
to step up and help the Vikings" (STAR TRIBUNE, 11/11).
..."Key" pro-stadium legislators said Monday that the latest
Twins ballpark plan "should pass the Senate and is picking
up support in the House" (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 11/11).
