CBS EXTENDS PACT WITH BIG TEN TO INCLUDE CONFERENCE TOURNEY

CBS Sports and the Big Ten have agreed to a multi-year
contract extension to broadcast Big Ten basketball games and
the Big Ten Tournament. The new deal, beginning with the
'97-98 season, calls for a total of 26 appearances by Big
Ten teams, including 20 regular season men's and women's
appearances and the semifinals and finals of the newly
created Big Ten tourney (CBS Sports). In Chicago, Michael
Hirsley noted that the previous CBS-Big Ten deal ran through
2001 "but did not account for the postseason conference
tournament." CBS Sports VP Programming Mike Aresco said
that "roughly half" of the Big Ten's telecasts will be
national with the rest regional (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 10/27).
