NHL'S 81ST SEASON FEATURES A WINTER BREAK AND MORE TV ACTION

          The NHL released its schedule for the '97-98 season,
     with opening night set for October 1.  With NHL players
     competing in the Nagano Olympics, the league will take a
     "Winter Break" from February 8-24.  The league opens its
     season outside of North America for the first time, as the
     Mighty Ducks-Canucks play two games at Yoyogi Arena in Tokyo
     October 4-5.  The '97-98 schedule will feature the most TV
     coverage in the U.S. in NHL history.  ESPN and ESPN2 will
     televise 26 and 76 regular season games, respectively, and
     cover the playoffs (NHL).  Fox expands its coverage from 24
     regular season games in '96-97 to 66.  It will show games on
     11 consecutive Saturdays, starting January 24.  All 20 U.S.-
     based teams will appear on Fox, with the Flyers, Avalanche,
     Kings, Rangers and Penguins each appearing ten times (Fox).
