LEAGUE NOTES

          As MLB's realignment committee meets this morning in
     Chicago, sources tell Mark Maske of the WASHINGTON POST that
     a "moderate reshuffling involving five or so teams by next
     season seems likely but the owners don't expect to make any
     decisions on the issue before September" (WASHINGTON POST,
     7/30)....Ellen Zavian, Exec Dir of the Women's Players
     Association, which represents women's soccer and softball
     players, says they have been contacted by individuals within
     basketball and volleyball leagues.  The WPA also says it is
     soliciting sponsorship and licensing opportunities for
     female athletes and plans to announce a book deal soon
     involving the U.S. national women's soccer team (USA TODAY,
     7/30).....The City of Houston, Texaco and CART have agreed
     to stage The Texaco Grand Prix of Houston on the streets of
     downtown Houston beginning next year and running annually
     through 2003 (Grand Prix of Houston).
