During this weekend's MA Handicap at East Boston's
Suffolk Downs, jockeys Pat Day and Shane Sellers plan to
"break a long-standing horse racing barrier" by wearing a
Breathe Right logo during the race. Jockeys are not
permitted to wear logos or company names during competition
due to state-by-state and track-by-track regulations. But a
three-way deal involving the jockeys, Breathe Right-parent
CNS, and Suffolk Downs, will enable the Breathe Right logo
to be prevalent on the jockeys' uniforms (Breathe Right).
AROUND THE STRETCH THEY COME? The BOSTON GLOBE's Ron
Indirisano notes that Sellers intends to wear the logo on
the upper portion of his right pant leg, the same patch he
was denied permission to wear at the Kentucky Derby.
Suffolk Downs race track Dir/Communications Chip Tuttle:
"The racing commission couldn't find anything prohibiting
it. ... If this opens the door for new sponsors in racing,
everyone will ultimately benefit." Sellers: "We're the only
athletes that aren't allowed to take endorsements. I
wouldn't want to see it like race car drivers, but one or
two or three should be no problem" (BOSTON GLOBE, 5/28).
