HOLY COW, COULD YANKEE GAMES STAY ON WPIX AFTER 46 YEARS?

WPIX-TV's 46-year relationship with the Yankees expires
September 12, but the MSG Network "seems willing -- almost eager
-- to extend WPIX a continued role," according to Phil Mushnick
of the N.Y. POST. With MSG Network holding exclusive rights to
local Yankee telecasts, the team's presence on WPIX has shrunk
from 100 games to 50 to "perhaps none next season." But the
"prevailing mindset from MSG seems to be that MSG Network will
carry 100 games" in '97, as WBIS, owned by Dow Jones and ITT,
would carry about 30 games, making around 20 games available to
WPIX. Mushnick notes "none of this is a done deal," but
negotiations are in progress. Mushnick also predicts the team's
radio deal with WABC will be extended at season's end (N.Y. POST,
8/25).
