RETAIL ROUND-UP: RUMBLE BREWING IN NEW YORK?
Richard Wilner looks at the "bare-knuckle fight" brewing
between Modell's Sporting Goods and The Sports Authority in the
New York City area. The Sports Authority's "rapid expansion" and
its recent focus on New York City, has made Sports Authority and
Modell's "bitter rivals." Both chains are "pressing" to pick up
customers from Herman's, which recently folded (N.Y. POST,
8/15)....The HOUSTON CHRONICLE examines Houston-based Oshman's
Sporting Goods. Oshman's expects to lose $8-8.5M for the quarter
ending August 3, blaming the loss on the "over-aggressive" buying
of merchandise by the company (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 8/14).
