LEAGUE NOTES

The New York State Athletic Commission authorized the
release of all but $1M of Riddick Bowe's approximately $5M purse
Thursday for his fight against Andrew Golota, according to
SportsTicker. The commission held back the money because of the
brawl after Goloto's disqualification. The remaining $1M will be
held pending completion of the investigation (USA TODAY,
7/26)....The International Basketball League has retained
Washington-DC based Sports America, Inc. to assist in talent
evaluation for the initial IBL draft in '97. The professional
basketball league is scheduled to begin play in November '97
(IBL)...The Teenage Basketball League, the idea hatched by
Cleveland autodealer Freddie Cleveland, is profiled in INSIDE
SPORTS. The league, for boys 17-20, is set to begin next July.
Brian McIntyre, NBA VP/Public Relations, said the NBA thinks
"it's a silly idea. Any league designed to entice kids to leave
high school and not go on to college is a bad idea socially, and
basketball wise" (INSIDE SPORTS, 9/96).
