PADRES CONTINUE TALKS IN SEARCH FOR NEW HOME

San Diego Port Commissioners Frank Urtasun and David Malcolm
confirmed they have had discussions with Padres Owner John Moores
and President Larry Lucchino about the Lane Field site for a new
Padres ballpark, according to Barry Bloom of the SAN DIEGO UNION
TRIBUNE. The waterfront site, once home to the minor league
Padres, has been a parking lot since the stadium was torn down in
'58. County Supervisor Ron Roberts notes, "We're dreaming a
little right now," but said the project could include inner
harbor development. Moores was cautious, adding, "I don't have
any more idea whether a ballpark would fit there than I have a
notion about how to perform brain surgery." Both Moores and
Lucchino are eyeing a 35-39,000 seat facility and have told city
leaders the expansion at Jack Murphy Stadium will be "unfriendly
for baseball" (S.D. UNION TRIBUNE, 5/17).
