GRIFFITHS: CANUCKS MAY NOT TURN A PROFIT FOR THREE YEARS

Northwest Sports Enterprises Ltd. Chair Arthur Griffiths
said yesterday it could be another three years before the Canucks
make money for shareholders, according to the Toronto GLOBE &
MAIL. Northwest recorded a loss of C$2.4M for the year ending
June 30, down from a $921,000 profit a year earlier. The losses
are attributed to higher player salaries and the lockout-
shortened '95 season. Northwest is supported by its majority
owner, Orca Bay Hockey Holdings Ltd., jointly controlled by
Griffiths and John McCaw, Jr. Orca Bay gave Northwest C$6M in
the last fiscal year, and an extra C$3M during the summer.
Griffiths says the Canucks will ultimately have to win the
Stanley Cup to make money. In the meantime, Northwest is
incurring what Griffiths called short-term expenses in an attempt
to boost revenue. The company is revamping the way it sells
radio and TV rights and is also promoting the Canucks on the
Internet (Robert Williamson, Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 12/19).
