FOR SHAQ DADDIES LOOKING FOR A HEALTHY SNACK -- THE SHAQ BAR

Shaquille O'Neal has joined with Amway Corp. to produce a
two-ounce, carbohydrate energy bar for recreational and pro
athletes that will be sold through Amway's direct sales network.
O'Neal's name will also be used with a line of vitamins. The
DETROIT NEWS' Gary Hoffman reports the deal "is a natural
relationship," as Magic Owner Rich DeVos also owns Amway.
O'Neal's agent, Leonard Armato, says Amway "didn't even get a
discount" on the use of O'Neal's name: "It's an arm's length
deal" (DETROIT NEWS, 11/29). However, because Amway does not
sell through retail, commercials are unlikely. Don't look for TV
ads, writes Michael Hiestand, since Amway "doesn't use much TV"
(USA TODAY, 11/30).
SALARY CAP QUESTIONS? Amway Senior VP/Market Development
David Brenner said that lengthy negotiations took place before
the deal could be announced because of concerns over the NBA
salary cap. However, NBA officials "gave it a clean bill of
health" (DETROIT NEWS, 11/29).
