NAMES IN THE NEWS

     NBA Commissioner DAVID STERN is profiled in Sunday's BERGEN
RECORD.  According to NHL Commissioner GARY BETTMAN: "There is no
question that David remains the model of what a modern league
commissioner should be" (BERGEN RECORD, 10/29)....HAKEEM OLAJUWON
is profiled in this week's NEWSWEEK.  To Hakeem being a role
model is not a marketing ploy, but his duty as a Muslim:  "You
don't do it for others, but for yourself" (NEWSWEEK, 11/6
issue)....BILL MURRAY sat with Braves Owner TED TURNER during
Game 6 of the World Series.  Murray was in town to talk to Turner
about a movie on fabled White Sox Owner BILL VEECK (USA TODAY,
10/30).... DEION SANDERS, asked if Georgia Dome is still "his
house":  "No, since the roof went in, I sold it" ("SportsCenter,"
ESPN,  10/29).  Sanders is expected to announce a multi-year,
multi-million dollar endorsement deal with Pepsi on Tuesday's
"Late Show with David Letterman" (THE DAILY)....Blazers Owner
PAUL ALLEN is featured in Sunday's N.Y. TIMES as the "6.5 Billion
Man."  It is noted that Allen is "working to merge sports and
software" with a Blazers home page and ESPNet's Sports Zone.
Allen may not "be making much money yet on his efforts to move
sports into cyberspace," but his foray has "excited other owners
who see a potential not unlike what cable was 15 years ago" (N.Y.
TIMES, 10/29)....Former Chiefs QB BILL KENNEY announced his
candidacy for Governor of Missouri today (THE DAILY).
