     MLB Associate General Counsel GENE ORZA has said DWIGHT
GOODEN's contract with the Yankees will not be approved until
Gooden gets a certified agent who examines the contract on his
behalf (L.A. TIMES, 10/18)....Yankees GM GENE MICHAEL will
reportedly become Dir of Major-League Scouting today (NEWSDAY,
10/18)....The Japanese paper SANKEI SPORTS is reporting that the
Yomiuri Giants are studying the possible acquisition of KEN
GRIFFEY JR. for a one-year contract worth $10M (KYODO NEWS,
10/18)....MAGIC JOHNSON, JOHN WOODEN, PETER UEBERROTH, and JOHN
MCKAY will be among those honored at the Los Angeles Sports
Council celebrating L.A.'s greatest sports moments (Sports
Council)....SHERYL SWOOPES was interviewed this morning on
"Bloomberg Business News" on Nike and her future in women's
basketball.  Asked about the "Air Swoopes," she expressed
excitiment of the idea of a women's basketball shoe out there
"not only for myself, but for younger girls coming up, so they
don't have to go to the store and have to wear a men's shoe all
the time" ("Bloomberg Business News," 10/18).
