MARKETPLACE ROUND-UP

     Stock for Eastbay Inc., a WI-based sportswear catalog
seller, is set to begin trading Friday on NASDAQ at the $15 a
share.  The IPO is 2 million shares.  Eastbay sells athletic
equipment and apparel to high school and college teams and to
individuals (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 9/29). ....With NFL
player salaries "now in the stratosphere, more and more athletes
are angling for higher-income business careers in order to ensure
a playing-days lifestyle" after their career ends, according to
Roger Thurow of the WALL STREET JOURNAL.  Last year, 200 players
sought off-season business training through the NFL's Career
Internship Program.  The JOURNAL notes the large number of
players who have become "financial consultants" (WALL STREET
JOURNAL, 9/29)....Indians Manager Mike Hargrove will be
spokesperson for The Sportsman Show, an OH outdoor sports and
leisure show that draws over 150,000 visitors annually
(Expositions, Inc)....The Raiders are running ads offering
single-game tickets on sale for their October 8 and October 22
home games, priced at $41, $51, and $61 (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS,
9/28)...Stride Rite Corp. said that "soft retail conditions
coupled with a lack of fashion hurt third quarter earnings."
Another problem is that "consumers remain cool toward Keds," one
of the company's mainstays, as 3rd quarter sales of the sneaker
fell 21% below last year (BOSTON HERALD, 9/29).
