MANY IN NORTHWEST SEE ONCE-HOT SEAHAWKS AS SEADOGS

The Seahawks, "once a franchise that regularly boasted
season ticket sales of more than 60,000 with a waiting list of
30,000 ... have watched attendance spiral downward in recent
years," writes Ron Newberry in the TACOMA NEWS TRIBUNE. This
season, the team has an all-time low season ticket base of
46,000, with less than 40,000 at the team's first two home
exhibition games. The Seahawks, who have finished last in the
AFC West the past three seasons, have also seen a drop in
merchandise sales. The Seahawks ranked 7th in the NFL in sales
in '85, dropped out of the top 10 in '89, and now are in the
bottom-third. Two years ago, the Seahawks had to start TV and
radio ads to sell tickets. Newberry reports that some fans blame
owner Ken Behring "for the team's demise," pointing to his
acquisition of the team "as the beginning of a loss of identity
for the Seahawks." Behring, a Californian who purchased the
'Hawks from the Nordstrom family in '88, has been rumored to be
interested in moving the team to L.A. (TACOMA NEWS TRIBUNE,
8/17).
DOLPHINS HIT HIGH WATER MARK: The Dolphins have sold
approximately 53,000 season tickets for this season, the team's
highest total since '73. This is the third consecutive year the
team has seen a rise in season ticket sales (Armando Salguero,
MIAMI HERALD, 8/18).
TEXAS DROUGHT: The San Antonio Texans of the CFL have hired
Jim Goodman as VP/Business Operations and Marketing in an effort
to build support in the area. The team had hoped to average
22,000/game this season, but has only averaged 17,142 over four
games (SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS, 8/18).
