ONE YEAR LATER II: THE MEDIA BARRAGE BEGINS A DAY EARLY

In this morning's CHICAGO SUN TIMES, Dave van Dyck poses a
Q&A regarding baseball's future. The lead: "Aug. 12, 1994. A
day that will live in baseball infamy." van Dyck predicts a
World Series will be played this season: "You can bet Bud Selig's
salary it will be" (CHICAGO SUN TIMES, 8/11)....This morning's
"Cover Story" in USA TODAY's sports section marks the
anniversary. Hal Bodley writes "nobody will raise a toast" to
mark the date. Don Fehr, Exec Dir of the MLBPA: "This is not an
anniversary that one particularly wants to remember" (USA TODAY,
8/11). USA TODAY's "In Focus" section also examines baseball a
year after the strike, noting the deepening division between the
successful teams financially and those with fiscal difficulties
(USA TODAY, 8/11). Both the WALL STREET JOURNAL and USA TODAY
have editorials calling for a deal between owners and players
(USA TODAY/WALL STREET JOURNAL, 8/11). This morning's N.Y. POST
marks the strike from both the Mets and Yankees' perspectives.
Headers: "Mets Weren't Ready to Walk Out on Game," and "Yanks
Didn't Think Strike Would Last" (N.Y. POST, 8/11).
EVEN THE HARDWARE INDUSTRY'S MAD: A full-page ad in USA
TODAY for the National Hardware Show takes a shot at baseball.
Text: "Baseball (crossed out in red ink). Hot Dogs. Apple Pie.
The Hardware Show. For fifty years there have been four (crossed
out with a three scribbled above) things you could always count
on" (USA TODAY, 8/11).
OPTIMISM? USA TODAY's Hal Bodley writes that baseball's
owners "are hopeful" of appointing Randy Levine, NYC's
commissioner of labor relations to be their chief negotiator (USA
TODAY, 8/11).
