WELCOME TO THE SHOW, STUPID

The Pirates ran a full page ad in the PITTSBURGH POST-
GAZETTE on Monday that read: "It has come to our attention that
our disappointing attendance numbers may be attributed to
confusion concerning the proper operations of stadium
turnstiles." The ad had a drawing of a turnstile with an arrow
pointing in which direction it turns. Below that it read: "They
turn counter-clockwise. Thank you. The Pirates." In Atlanta,
I.J. Rosenberg writes the team "probably didn't endear themselves
to fans" with the ad. Rosenberg: "Many in the press box felt
the ad inadvertently poked fun at Pittsburgh fans, and TBS even
ran a picture of it on its telecast. No wonder baseball is in
such bad shape" (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 7/26).
