REEBOK CUTS HIT AGAIN AS COMPANY WILL LAY OFF 197 WORKERS

Continuing with their plans to cut expenses by $75M, Reebok
International announced plans yesterday to lay off "an additional
197 employees," according to this morning's BOSTON GLOBE. With
the 250 previously laid off employees and the elimination of 132
new positions for '95, the total reduction in staff now hits 579,
according to Reebok CEO Paul Fireman. Reebok also predicted
lower earnings for "its second quarter due to weak sales and
heavy advertising expenses." Fireman said retail sales "have
generally been weak" this quarter, and Reebok's U.S. ad spending
for the 2nd quarter will be $13M above last year "as we shifted
our plans in order to gain exposure during telecasts" of the NBA
playoffs (Chris Reidy, BOSTON GLOBE, 6/29). Most of the cuts
will come from its international operation. Reebok will also
take a "one-time, pretax charge" of $15M-$18M, or $.12-.14 per
share, for the second quarter "to cover the cost of
restructuring" (Steff Gelston, BOSTON HERALD, 6/29).
