Sports Industrialists

     The Tampa Bay Devil Rays have narrowed their list for GM to
three finalists, according to this morning's TAMPA TRIBUNE.  The
remaining candidates: Expos GM KEVIN MALONE; Braves Asst GM CHUCK
LAMAR, and Marlins Asst GM FRANK WREN (TAMPA TRIBUNE,
5/17)....The Devil Rays also announced that MICHAEL SEAMON has
been named as the team's Merchandising Manager.  Seamon comes
managing from the Univ. of Notre Dame's campus athletic retail
operations (Devil Rays).

     Blackhawks owner BILL WIRTZ is planning to build a 5,000
space parking lot on the grounds of the old Chicago Stadium.  At
$10 per space, the parking lot will be a welcome change from the
old stadium which cost $2M a year to operate
(SPORTSTICKER)....JOE MONTANA will officially anounce today he is
joining NBC as a studio analyst ("Sports Tonight," CNN,
5/16)....A federal jury yesterday began hearing the case of
former NBA player JEFF RULAND who is suing the Celtics over
claims he suffered a career-ending injury when a Celtics ballboy
hit his leg with a ball cart ("SportsCenter," ESPN,
5/16)....PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS Columnist BILL CONLIN underwent
heart bypass surgery Monday outside of Philadelphia.  He was
listed in stable condition yesterday (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS,
5/17)....Broncos QB JOHN ELWAY will join coaches WAYNE FONTES and
DENNIS ERICKSON in the fourth annual MIKE UTLEY Celebrity Golf
Tournament this week in Scotsdale, AZ (USA TODAY, 5/17).

     The Bullets' mascot, HOOPS, continues his "Sleepless 'Til
Seacaucus" tour today, following a stopover in Philadelphia on
Tuesday.  Hoops, who is making the walk from USAir Arena in
Landover, MD, to the site of the NBA Draft Lottery in Seacaucus,
NJ, puts his size 25's to the pavement again today with several
stops in Eastern PA, before landing for the night in Somerset, NJ
(Bullets).
