BT Sport Getting Creative Around Remote Sports Productions

BT Sport COO Jamie Hindhaugh detailed the British network's pivot to remote production brought on by the pandemic while speaking at SBJ and Leaders' Media Innovators virtual series. With three Remote Operating Center galleries, BT Sport adopted environments with “very few people on site,” which Hindhaugh called “a huge success.” The new flexibility has allowed for fully remote production of the network’s Bundesliga games, with commentator Paul Dempsey “live from his loft in Dublin.”

Hindhaugh: "It's all here to stay. Yeah, what it means is you can do things differently depending on what the requirement is." Hindhaugh added, "(It) does make me smile, to eventually get to be doing the Premier League fully remote production."  Hindhaugh said BT Sport was prepared for the transition, as it had already been working remotely over satellite, 4G and IP at least 18 months before the pandemic.

Quick Hits:

*On adapting to viewers’ changing habits: “What we're trying to do is move slowly but surely from the one to many, to one to one. So we launched something a couple of weeks ago called Match Day Experience, which is five different products, which on their own are all pretty exciting. But the combination of them, for me, it really touches that word experience.”

*On the Watch Together feature: “That's where we have worked with a company called (Scenic) and really key to this was about syncing up. So you can watch the live game and you can have three other friends, videos, all synced all watching at the same time. You can turn the commentary down, but it means you can actually virtually now go to a live game with your friends, even though you can't physically.”

*On BT’s expenditure on its new innovations: “You're assuming because it's innovation, it costs a lot of money. That's not true. Innovation comes from the way you think and using the workflows you have. … It's about having the right strategic partners. So we are a community of very clever companies to come together with this sole aim.”
