Leicester City Incorporating Catapult Sports Tracking Technology

Catapult's GPS sensors help monitor soccer-specific player movements across six different categoriescatapult

EPL side Leicester City is one of eight teams that have been beta testing a new tracking solution from sports performance and analytics company Catapult Sports. Catapult's GPS sensors can now help monitor soccer-specific player movements across six different categories, spanning from very low intensity to dynamic high intensity. One of the key differentiators through the new solution is identifying risk and minimizing soft tissue injuries.

Leicester City Head of Performance Innovation Paul Balsom said that from the millions of data points being collected by the wearable technology, he and his staff can describe in greater detail "the mechanical load that we’re putting on a player." Balsom, who is also the Performance Manager for the Swedish men’s national team, explained that specificity of training for each player is another key area of emphasis with the Catapult tracking solution.

Added Balsom: "How specific is my training for this one player compared to what he or she is doing during the game? We can now say, 'OK, this is the type of running he or she is doing in a game. How are we replicating that during our training session? … Also, how specific is the work we’re doing to prepare players to return to play?'"
