Australia-NZ Closes In On 2023 Women's WC As Japan Drops Out

Australia and New Zealand's joint Women's FIFA World Cup bid team is not "celebrating yet" despite its biggest rival, Japan, pulling out of the race to host the '23 tournament, "delivering the Tasman bid full support" from the Asian Football Confederation. Colombia and the trans-Tasman bid may be "the only two choices" on FIFA's ballot when the organization votes on Friday. The Japanese FA suggested impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic "compounded the decision to not host the tournament in close proximity" to the '21 Games. Earlier this month, FIFA declared Australia and New Zealand's bid the strongest of the three on the basis of stadia, facilities, commercial return, broadcast metrics and fan engagement." Japan's withdrawal also will "potentially land Australia and New Zealand an additional vote" on Friday (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 6/22).

Meanwhile, the Colombian Football Federation on Monday claimed that the FIFA evaluation report which "highlighted that security could be an issue" if Colombia hosted the event was "based on a preconceived bias rather than reality." The Colombian bid "received the lowest score in reports prepared by FIFA’s evaluation team of the three bids" (REUTERS, 6/22). Last week, CONMEBOL President Alejandro Dominguez and Colombian Football Federation President Ramón Jesurún wrote to FIFA to "object to the Colombia bid’s evaluation score -- but FIFA stood by its report" (THE AUSTRALIAN, 6/22).
