Tokyo Olympic Marathon Events To Run On Games' Final Days

The IOC has agreed to hold the Tokyo Olympics' marathon and race walk events, which have been relocated to Sapporo, "over the last four days" of the games. The IOC’s executive board confirmed that the men’s marathon will start at 7:00am on the final day of the Tokyo Games, while the women’s race "will start at the same time a day earlier." However, the body is "yet to decide the specific route of the marathon races" (KYODO, 12/4). The IOC moved the events out of Tokyo to "avoid the stifling heat and humidity." Now some swimmers and an 11,000-member coaching body are "asking that something similar should be done with the distance-swimming venue in Tokyo Bay." The water temperatures there were "near danger levels in test events this summer for open-water swimming and triathlon." E. coli levels also "plague the urban venue, and athletes have complained about the odors coming from the small inlet" (AP, 12/4).

Meanwhile, Greenpeace has said that it "detected radiation hotspots near the starting point of the upcoming Olympic torch relay in Fukushima." Japan’s environment ministry said that the area was "generally safe but it was in talks with local communities to survey the region before" next summer's Games (AFP, 12/4).

Looking ahead to the '24 Paris Games, Tahiti's bid to host the surfing competitions has "not met" any resistance from the IOC "despite its remote location. But it has "emerged as the frontrunner to serve as the host venue for a sport that will make its Olympic debut" at the Tokyo Games. The village of Teahupo'o, a "regular stop on the World Surf League circuit, boasts some of the biggest waves on the surfing map with regular large waves guaranteed in August." Four other sites closer to the '24 Olympic village are "still in the running including surfing hotspots in Biarritz and Brittany" (AFP, 12/4).
