Sustainability First

Charlie Enright and Mark Towill's 1 Degree sailing team named Rhode Island-based 11th Hour Racing the title sponsor for their entry in the '21-22 installment of The Ocean Race. 11th Hour Racing, an ocean sustainability organization, is a long-time partner of 1 Degree. The timing of the deal announced Wednesday will provide a big boost for the team, Enright said. The funding will allow Enright and Towill to launch a campaign for the next Ocean Race, whose new owners pushed the start of the next edition back by a year from the race's traditional three-year cycle.

"In two previous campaigns, we have never had the luxury of any long-term preparation and planning for our team," he said. "And starting to put the team together now will have a huge impact on our race readiness and pre-race training plan."

11th Hour Racing Co-Founder & President Rob MacMillan emphasized that the purpose of the deal with 1 Degree is to spread his organization's message about the importance of ocean sustainability. "It is pretty atypical for a sponsorship because we don't have a product that we're selling," MacMillan said. "We literally are just trying to use the sport as a promotional vehicle and then find avenues where we can make technical improvements." The Ocean Race features an onboard cameraman who creates branded content featuring sponsors like 11th Hour.

Towill said that partnering with an environmentally-friendly sponsor was a priority.

"Sustainability really is important to us and it's ingrained in the campaign from top to bottom," he said. "We're certainly not going to be partnered with any oil and gas companies or anything like that ... We're selective about who we work with."
