NASCAR Unveils Radically Different Schedule For '21 Season

NASCAR "promised radical changes" to the '21 schedule and delivered today with six road courses, the first dirt race for the Cup Series since '70 and new stops in Nashville and Austin. Dropped from the lineup were Kentucky Speedway and Chicagoland Speedway, two “cookie-cutter” intermediate tracks that were part of a "staid schedule that lacked variation or originality." Michigan Int'l Speedway, Dover Int'l Speedway and Texas Motor Speedway each "lost one of two Cup Series points races." Atlanta Motor Speedway and Darlington Speedway each "added a second race to their schedules." Bristol Motor Speedway will "experiment with a dirt race by filling the 0.533-mile bullring with dirt" for the first race of its kind since '70 (AP, 9/30).

The Cup Series' Brickyard 400 will be "running on the road course" at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Aug. 15. The race weekend will "include a Saturday IndyCar race; the second doubleheader weekend for the two series." IMS President Doug Boles also "expects the Xfinity series to run in conjunction with the others." Race brandings are "not yet finalized" (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 9/30).

NASCAR did a phased rollout of the schedule throughout the day.
