Belmont Stakes Moves To June 20, Becomes Triple Crown Opener

The Belmont Stakes will be held on June 20 without fans and will serve as the “opening leg of horse racing's Triple Crown for the first time.” The race, which will be two weeks later than its original date of June 6, will be run “at a shorter distance than usual” -- it will be 1 1/8 miles instead of the typical 1 1/2 miles. The Kentucky Derby will be held on Sept. 5, while the Preakness will wrap up the Triple Crown on Oct. 3 (AP, 5/19). NYRA CEO David O’Rourke said, “This is the year for traditions to go out the window” (N.Y. TIMES, 5/19).
