Monumental S&E Launches New Caps Gaming Esports Brand
Monumental Sports & Entertainment has formed a new esports-centric brand in Caps Gaming. The new brand will help grow the NHL gaming community and hockey’s intersection with esports, including hosting a 32-team, 6-on-6 tournament around EA Sports' "NHL" franchise with a $15,000 prize pool. MSE Senior VP/Strategic Initiatives Zach Leonsis said he believes what MSE and the Capitals are doing could be a “test-bed” for the NHL, which does not currently have an esports league. “This is another opportunity for us to engage with an audience that doesn’t always have traditional overlap with our current teams,” Leonsis said.
The Capitals also signed NHL esports pro John "JohnWayne" Casagranda as an official streamer, marking a first-of-its-kind relationship between an NHL club and gamer. He will stream consistently on the Caps Gaming Twitch channel between now and the end of June.
