NBC Olympics Programming Exec Peter Diamond To Retire In '20

NBC Olympics Exec VP/Programming Peter Diamond will retire at the conclusion of the '20 Tokyo Games, sources said, concluding a career that started with ABC in ‘74 and includes 18 Olympics to date. More than any other individual, Diamond decides which sports and events are emphasized in NBC’s coverage -- decisions that can swing millions of dollars in sponsorship revenue and have long-lasting ramifications for individual NGBs and athletes. His tenure has seen radical changes to the Olympic program, including the addition of snowboarding, golf and women’s hockey.

It is possible Diamond could take a part-time consulting role with NBC after Tokyo, a source said. He will be 70 by then. No decisions have been made on a replacement, but he or she is likely to come from within. Diamond is “an incredible steward of every sport that was ever involved in the Olympic movement, especially the newest ones,” said former U.S. Ski & Snowboard CMO Mike Jaquet. “You would not expect that but it was absolutely true. He got more excited about the changes being made to the formats and the sports in the Olympics than anybody else in the movement.”
