Univision Deportes Goes Dark On Dish Amid Carriage Dispute

Univision Deportes went dark on Dish Network early this morning; and judging by the animosity from their respective corporate statements, it appears the two sides are far away from any kind of resolution. Dish and Univision previously were unable to come to terms on Univision, and Dish said, “The Univision story remains the same: its content, on the whole continues to decline in viewership, and as a result, the economics of their proposals do not make sense.” Dish also brought up Univision’s direct-to-consumer Univision Now offering, which “Univision continues to sell … at a lower price than Univision proposes charging Dish customers. We don’t think that’s right.”

Univision’s counter: “Given that Dish experienced its worst-ever quarterly subscriber losses after dropping the bulk of Univision’s networks and stations, its unwillingness to recognize the power of Hispanic consumers … is bizarre and disappointing.” Sports programming that will be affected includes four upcoming soccer matches: two USMNT games (Thursday vs. England and next Tuesday vs. Italy) and two Mexican men’s national team games (Friday and next Tuesday, both against Argentina). Liga MX has one more regular-season match left before the playoffs. Dish is offering a $5/month credit for DishLatino customers.
