Social Media Weighs In On NCAA Hoops Guilty Verdict

A federal jury today convicted two former Adidas execs and a former runner for a NBA agent on NCAA hoops-related fraud charges, and social media reaction was quick to chime in. CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd tweeted, “A NY jury may have just cleaned up college basketball without the NCAA lifting a finger.” NBC Sports’ Rob Dauster: “I think it goes without saying that buying into the idea that the schools were the victims in this case is total and complete horsesh*t. … Given that the judge made it very clear that NCAA rules and amateurism was not on trial - and limited the scope of what the defense could argue - this was always going to be the outcome.” The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel wrote, “I was one of the many who did not buy the notion that the schools (Kansas, etc) were victims of fraud. But the jury wasn’t comprised of college sports fans, they represent the public at large, and they believed these shoe guys broke the law.”

Yahoo Sports’ Dan Wetzel, “Jury effectively turned amateurism into federal law, which could allow the NCAA to hunker down on its rule book. That said, the upcoming trials, if held, will be ugly for college basketball. Especially the one in April.” The Athletic’s Seth Davis added, “The surprise about the verdict centers on our disbelief that schools were “victimized.” But I am guessing jury focused on the way defendants secretly moved money around and covered their tracks with lies. That was clearly fraudulent.”
