Concussions Down In NFL Preseason Year-Over-Year

Concussions in the NFL preseason declined 13.1% from 91 to 79, NFL health and safety execs told reporters this afternoon during a break in the league owners meetings. The NFL has focused on promoting better helmets and intervening with clubs that showed high incidences of preseason concussions, the execs said. “This is a substantial drop-off,” said NFL Senior VP/Health & Safety Jeffrey Miller. “We are pleased with where we are.”

Miller and NFL Chief Medical Officer Allen Sills each emphasized they were not content with the results and planned further efforts to drive the figures lower. They declined to say which way regular-season concussions were trending. One notable development was of the 91 concussions during practices and preseason games, none came on the kickoffs, Miller said. There were three on kickoffs during the '17 preseason. The kickoff has long been identified as one of the more dangerous plays during a game.
