Morning Sports Shows Focus On NBA Trade, Not MLB All-Star

MLB typically can count on the All-Star Game dominating the sports talk shows the Wednesday morning following the Midsummer Classic, but news of the Kawhi Leonard-DeMar DeRozan trade stole many of the headlines. ESPN’s “Get Up!” and “First Take,” as well as FS1’s “Undisputed,” all led with the Spurs-Raptors deal. While “Get Up!” quickly followed with highlights and discussion about the All-Star Game, neither “First Take” nor “Undisputed” devoted any time to the on-field action from Nationals Park. The only baseball talk on either show revolved around the controversial tweets from Brewers P Josh Hader’s high school days that surfaced late last night during the All-Star Game.

ESPN’s Mike Greenberg admitted the “Get Up!” staff had to call an audible after news broke that the former NBA Finals MVP was heading to Toronto. He said, "And we thought we were going to start with the All-Star Game this morning.” ESPN’s Trey Wingo also acknowledged the oddity this morning on his radio show, when he said, “This is the rarest of rare. Normally, you sit here the day after the All-Star Game and you say to yourself, ‘Self, what am I going to talk about today in terms of sports?’ And the answer is usually nothing, unless we’re breaking down inning by inning what happened in the All-Star Game.” He added this is an “unusual day,” as today normally is the “slowest sports news day of the year."
