NFL Scales Back Celebration Penalties, Shortens Overtime Period

The NFL today eased its widely-mocked ban on celebrations after touchdowns. Celebrations that mimic violence, are sexually suggestive and taunting are still banned, but ones that use the football as a prop are now allowed. Also, group celebrations and celebrating on the ground are now allowed. Commissioner Roger Goodell met with more than 80 current and former players in developing the new policy, which did not require an owners vote. Infractions of the policy led to on-field penalties and player fines, as they will for violations of the new policy.

The league also as expected cut its overtime period from 15 minutes to 10 minutes; eliminated the preseason cut from 90 to 75 players (teams can cut from 90 players to 53 now after the final preseason game); and allowed teams to bring two players back from the injured reserve list instead of just one.
