USL Independence To Host Swansea City At Charlotte Stadium

EPL club Swansea City as part of their summer tour of the U.S. will play an international friendly on July 13 against the Charlotte Independence, marking the first time the USL club will play a club from the U.K.’s top league. Independence President & Managing Partner Jim McPhilliamy confirmed that he expected a capacity crowd at the updated 4,750-seat Ramblewood Stadium in southern Charlotte. He said the stadium will be complete in the next two weeks, which gives the club the “opportunity to do what some of the other big cities are doing and bring in some friendlies that’ll be really, really exciting.”

The game in Charlotte will be first of two Swansea will play in the U.S.; a second match against the USL Richmond Kickers is set for July 16. Independence GM Tom Engstrom said it was too early to tell how many of Swansea’s top players will make the trip. “They have a couple of guys for sure that are playing in the European championships, and it probably depends on how their team does,” he said. “Generally they’ll have a group that plays the first half and a group that plays the second half.”
