NBA Gearing Up To Tip Off Its First Game Of African Continent

Twenty NBA players on Saturday will play an exhibition in Johannesburg, South Africa, the league’s first game on the continent. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said the game could be a “precursor towards a pre-season or regular-season game in Africa.” Raptors GM Masai Ujiri, who is acting as Team Africa GM this weekend, said the Raptors are “very, very interested” in playing in an African game. Ujiri: “We’ve definitely had discussions but they are elementary in some ways” (TORONTO STAR, 7/30).

Silver, who is in Johannesburg for the game, said, “Part of why I’m here is to continue to investigate new facilities. We would want a larger, more modern arena for a regular or pre-season game here. And it’s also to test the response here. These things just take time" (AP, 7/30).
