MLS Announces Minnesota Expansion Team To Join League In '18

MLS Commissioner Don Garber today formally announced that Minnesota has been awarded an expansion team that is scheduled to begin play in '18. The team will be operated by an ownership group led by NASL club Minnesota United FC Owner Bill McGuire. Also in the group are Robert and Jim Pohlad, whose family owns the Twins, T’Wolves Owner Glen Taylor and Wendy Carlson Nelson of the Carlson Companies. The club is aiming to play at a new soccer-specific stadium in downtown Minneapolis located in the Farmers Market neighborhood near Target Field. McGuire said that the club is working on finalizing plans for the new stadium by July 1.

When it enters the league, Minnesota United will be the 23rd MLS club. New teams in Atlanta and L.A. are expected to join in '17, while one more team is still set to be announced to reach Garber's goal of 24 teams by '20. Miami and Sacramento are the front-runners for that final spot.
