IOC's Thomas Bach Accuses Politicians Of "Ostentatious Gesture"
IOC President Thomas Bach today accused world leaders of using the Sochi Games "as a political platform 'on the backs of the athletes,' and of snubbing the games without even being invited." Bach in a "hard-hitting speech" said that politicians are "using the Olympics to make an 'ostentatious gesture' serving their own agendas." Without naming any individuals, Bach's comments "appeared directed at President Barack Obama and European politicians who have taken stands against Russia's law banning gay 'propaganda' among minors" (AP, 2/4).
Meanwhile, NBC's Matt Lauer noted Russia President Vladimir Putin arrived in Sochi today to "oversee all of the final preparations" ("Today," NBC, 2/4).
