Moody’s Warns D-I Athletics Could Be Risk To School Credit

Moody's Investors Service is “again questioning the direction of major college sports and says in a new report that credit risks for universities are growing.” In laying out risk factors to D-I programs, Moody's cited the “increasing use of public subsidies to fund sports, exposure to litigation over head injuries, and the possible movement away from the NCAA amateurism model.” The firm in a release wrote, "Costs could also increase if an expansion of the ongoing O’Bannon V. NCAA case were to incorporate current players as well as broaden claims on revenues from the media and licensing" (AL.com, 10/11).
