The Astros today will formally announce that they have signed No. 1 overall draft pick P Mark Appel to a contract. Appel is expected to receive a $6.35M signing bonus, which is $1.44M "less than the maximum slot value" (CHRON.com, 6/19).

Hockey Canada has selected Montreal and Toronto to serve as host cities for the IIHF World Junior Championships in '15 and '17. The two cities "will serve as host cities both years, with Montreal home to the preliminary round and Toronto hosting the medal round in 2015, and the reverse in 2017" (NHL.com, 6/19).

The 49ers have sold "more than 80 percent" of seats and suites in Levi's Stadium, up from 75 percent in March (BIZJOURNALS.com, 6/19).

Tacoma city officials this week "began soliciting bids to explore selling the naming rights to the 3-decades-old Tacoma Dome" (THENEWSTRIBUNE.com, 6/19).
