Double-A Barons Opening $64M Regions Field In Birmingham, Ala.
The Double-A Southern League Birmingham Barons tonight open Regions Field, their new $64M ballpark, meaning pro baseball is "officially back in the Magic City." The team moved out of the city limits to Hoover, Ala., after closing Rickwood Field in '87 (BIRMINGHAM NEWS, 4/10). While "some people might view leaving the suburbs as a gamble," the Barons have a "sweetheart deal." The club could gross $3.7M a year from a contract that gives them "control of concessions and most of the ticket revenue" (AL.com, 4/10).
