Mariners Home Opener Highlights Safeco's New Playing Dimensions
The Mariners host their home opener tonight against the Astros following offseason renovations to Safeco Field, where "most of the focus will be on the new dimensions of the playing field." The Mariners made "drastic changes to the outfield." Fences were brought in by 4-17 feet, and the 16-foot wall has been replaced by a cantina named after former MLBer Edgar Martinez. Gone is the hand-operated scoreboard, and the new video board "has been proclaimed to be the largest in baseball" (AP, 4/7).
