Entergy: Super Bowl Blackout Caused By Electrical Relay Device
Entergy New Orleans on Friday said that it has "traced the cause of Sunday's Super Bowl blackout to an electrical relay device." The utility company said the device "was specifically installed to protect the Mercedes-Benz Superdome equipment in the event of a cable failure between the switchgear and the stadium. ... This device has since been removed from service." SMG Senior VP/Stadiums & Arenas Doug Thornton said that he was "certain early on that the outage was not caused by too much demand for power on the stadium's electrical system" (NOLA.com, 2/8).
