ESPN Sees Uptick For Orange Bowl Overnight, Decline For Rose Bowl

ESPN earned a 9.6 overnight Nielsen rating for Stanford’s win over Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl, marking the best overnight for any non-NFL program on cable TV since last year’s BCS National Championship. The 9.6 overnight, however, is down 3% from a 9.9 for the Oregon-Wisconsin matchup last year. The Rose Bowl moved from ABC to ESPN in ’11, and this year’s overnight would mark the lowest-rated game since at least ’85.

Meanwhile, ESPN earned a 6.5 overnight for Florida State’s win over Northern Illinois in the Discover Orange Bowl last night, up 44% from a 4.5 for West Virginia’s rout of Clemson last year, which aired on Jan. 4. The game led ESPN to a primetime win among all nets (broadcast or cable). The New Year’s Day primetime game last year -- Oklahoma State-Stanford in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl -- earned a 9.0 overnight.
