GILLETTE TO BREAK TWO NEW NASCAR-THEMED ADS SATURDAY

Gillette will break two new TV spots Saturday that highlightthe company’s NASCAR partnership and its sponsorship of the Gillette YoungGuns.  The 30-second spots, via BBDO,N.Y., will air during the TNT telecast of the Budweiser Shootout, and will runexclusively during NASCAR programming on TNT, NBC and Fox throughout the ’04season (Gillette).


FRED RIDLEY TO BE APPOINTED 58th USGA PRESIDENT SATURDAY

The USGA will host its annual meeting tomorrow in Orlando,and the ST. PETERSBURG TIMES noted that USGA Exec Committee VP Fred Ridleywill be named the association’s 58th President at the meeting.  Ridley, a former U.S. Amateur champion and apartner in the law firm Foley & Lardner, “could work as many as 100 days ayear on the USGA’s behalf, traveling to the major championships at his ownexpense and helping shape policy” (ST.PETERSBURG TIMES, 2/5).

USA TODAY reports that NCWO Chair Martha Burk calledRidley’s appointment “outrageous,” as Ridley is a member of Augusta Nationaland Pine Valley, two all-male clubs. Noting the work the USGA does with young women, Burk said, “This isembarrassing.  It makes them lookdishonest and hypocritical” (USA TODAY, 2/6).


DUNLOP SLAZENGER GROUP ACQUIRED FOR REPORTED $73.3M

The DAILY DEAL reported that Sports World Int’l has acquiredDunlop Slazenger Group in a deal reportedly worth $73.3M.  Mike Ashley, “the secretiveproprietor of the rival Donnay brand,” owns Sports World Int’l.  A source familiar with the situation saidthat as part of the deal with Ashley, Dunlop Slazenger “had been able to reachagreement on its outstanding debt with the creditor banks, led by Royal Bank ofScotland Group, but no details of the restructuring were disclosed” (DAILYDEAL, 2/5).


BUZZER BEATERS

SPORTING NEWS reports that ESPN’s Pro Bowl telecast “willinclude an on field cameraman for the in-the-huddle shots,” similar to that ofthe XFL (SPORTING NEWS, 2/9 issue).

The THOROUGHBRED TIMES reported that the Hong KongJockey Club has “reached a three-year agreement with Mercedes-Benz China Ltd.for sponsorship of the Hong Kong Derby,” which will be run March 21 at Sha Tinracecourse (THOROUGHBREDTIMES, 2/5).

The AP reports that ATP Tour player Greg Rusedski“will not allow the World-Anti-Doping Agency to attend his hearing in Montrealon Monday for a positive steroid test” (AP,2/6).

The PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER notes that Comcast SportsNet will be taping “Meet the Phillies” from7:30-8:30pm ET during the Phillies’ “Final Pieces” event at the WachoviaCenter.  Everyone who attends theauction is “invited to stick around and be a part of the TV show” (PHILADELPHIAINQUIRER, 2/6).

Rangers SS Alex Rodriguez will make his firstappearance in the Dallas area this off-season, when appears at the RangersMid-Winter Banquet to accept theclub’s Player of the Year award and poses for another presentation of the ALMVP trophy (FT.WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 2/6).

The Hawks will host Asian-American Appreciation Night forthe club’s 7:00pm ET game against the Rockets.

Fort Worth residents will vote on a $273.5M bond packagethat includes $9M to “demolish the Harley Service Center, build a parking lotto serve the Cultural District, landscape the area and realign the street. …Demolition is key to the construction of a long-talked-about new arena for theWill Rogers Memorial Center,” which hosts the Stock Show & Rodeo (FT.WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 1/26).

ESPN2 will showcase eight NCAA women’s basketball gameswithin two telecast windows, beginning at 2:00pm ET.  The regionalized coverage is a preview of ESPN and ESPN2’s plansfor the first two rounds of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament (ESPN).

Prilosec OTC and NASCAR Nextel Cup driver Sterling Marlinwill offer fans the opportunity to vote for one of three different paintschemes for the No. 40 Dodge.  The paintscheme that receives the most votes by April 30 will be unveiled for PrilosecOTC’s one-race primary sponsorship during the May 28 race at Lowe’s MotorSpeedway.

CBC’s Ron MacLean will interview NHLPA Exec Dir BobGoodenow and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman during the All-StarGame’s first and second intermissions, respectively, about the league’s laborsituation (TORONTO STAR, 2/6).
