US WEEKLY EDITOR LEERHSEN ENTERS SI'S PLAYING FIELD

SI Managing Editor Terry McDonell announced today that US Weekly Editor Charlie Leerhsen will join the sports magazine as an exec editor effective April 1. Leerhsen has worked at US Weekly since 1998, and helped McDonell transition US from a monthly to a weekly publication (THE DAILY).


RED ROCKS: UK'S LEEDS UNITED REPORTS A LOSS

The FINANCIAL TIMES reports that Leeds United "plunged deep into the red on Friday," as the "absence of lucrative Champions League football and expensive player purchases impacted on its balance sheet." The club reported pre-tax losses of $19.7M "in the six months to December 31, compared with a profit of [$142,220.80] last year." Revenues fell 7% to $54.4M (FINANCIAL TIMES, 3/8).


PIRATES' GREENBERG CONSTRUCTS NEW CONSULTING POSITION

C.H. Johnson Consulting announced today that Pirates VP/New Ballpark Development & Communications Steven Greenberg will join the firm's sports, stadium and real estate development consulting roster. While with the Pirates, Greenberg coordinated the design and construction of the $216M PNC Park (THE DAILY).


MARITAL MARKETING: SOUTHERN ADS USE PGA GOLFERS, WIVES

Southern Company, the Official Energy Company of the PGA Tour, will launch two new 30-second television spots featuring PGA Tour players from the Southeast, including Billy Andrade and Stewart Cink, and their wives. The spots will run during the PGA Tour season from March until October (THE DAILY).


NASCAR DRIVES $455M OF REVENUE THROUGH ATLANTA

The ATLANTA BUSINESS CHRONICLE reports that Sunday's NASCAR Atlanta 500 and Atlanta Motor Speedway's Fall NASCAR race will generate "about $455 million at the city's hotels, restaurants and stores." In contrast, the Braves' 81 home games "will generate about $105 million during the baseball season," the Hawks expect to "bring in about $32.6 million during its season" and the Falcons "will add another $10 million this year" (ATLANTA BUSINESS CHRONICLE, 3/8).

NBCOlympics.com and Olympics.com, the official Web sites of the '02 Winter Games, maintained 99.98% availability over the course of the Games and have become one of the largest event Web sites in sports history with 9 million unique users logging on each week during the Games (THE DAILY).

The EDMONTON SUN reports that Edge Marketing spokesperson Mike Burg is "close to being able to announce a 45-city North American tour" featuring Canadian Olympic Gold Medal winners David Pelletier and Jamie Sale, and the Russian Gold Medal pair of Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze (EDMONTON SUN, 3/8).

The MLS Dallas Burn has partnered with Fox Sports 1190 AM on a radio deal that includes the return of the weekly Burn radio show, a weekly interview with coach Mike Jeffries or President & GM Andy Swift and a regular presence in the station's sports reports (THE DAILY).

Former Mets 1B Keith Hernandez will serve as analyst for a combined 35 telecasts of Mets games on MSG Network, FOX Sports Net and WPIX-WB this season (THE DAILY).

FLORIDA TODAY reports that the Brevard County Manatees "have reached a one-year player development agreement with the Montreal Expos to serve as their affiliate in the Class A Florida State League this season" (FLORIDA TODAY, 3/8).

Jiffy Lube and Yahoo will sponsor an online contest in partnership with Walt Disney Pictures' "The Rookie" that asks high school athletes to vote for their favorite coaches. Students can log on and vote through Thursday, March 21 (THE DAILY).

The FINANCIAL TIMES reports that Kmart will "cut 22,000 jobs - some 10 per cent of the total workforce - and close 284 stores as part of its initial Chapter 11 financial review" (FINANCIAL TIMES, 3/8).

The Mavericks and the Greater Dallas Asian American Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with Johnnie Walker and Hennessy, will host an invitation-only reception from 6:30-8:00pm MT for Mavericks C Wang Zhizhi.
