Guest Moderator: Craig Turnbull

Senior Vice President, Marketing and Communications, Olympia Entertainment/Detroit Red Wings

Craig Turnbull was named Senior Vice President of Marketing & Communications for Olympia Entertainment and the Detroit Red Wings in April 2010. In his current role, Turnbull leads a dedicated team in the areas of sports and entertainment marketing, sponsorship sales and activation, community relations and the Red Wings Foundation, public relations and corporate communications, social media and content development, digital marketing, creative services and curation. During Turnbull’s tenure, the organization has recorded its best-ever sponsorship sales figures. Most recently, Turnbull coordinated much of the marketing and communications efforts surrounding the opening of the state-of-the-art Little Caesars Arena, which was named 2018 Sports Facility of the Year at the industry-leading Sports Business Awards established by SportsBusiness Journal and SportsBusiness Daily.

Prior to joining Olympia Entertainment, Turnbull spent 10 years at Palace Sports & Entertainment as Vice President of Brand Management, including oversight of all marketing activities, creative services and digital media. He also served as Chief Operating Officer for the Detroit Shock of the WNBA from 2007-09. With Palace Sports & Entertainment, Turnbull and his boss, now Olympia Entertainment President & CEO Tom Wilson, were named "Marketers of the Year" by Brandweek magazine in 2004 after leading the Detroit Pistons through a complete brand overhaul, signaling the first time the recognition was given to a sports team. Turnbull also won three EFFIE awards from the American Marketing Association, recognizing the most effective advertising campaigns in the country. Turnbull played a large role in developing and implementing several innovative creative programs with Palace Sports & Entertainment, including the Random Acts of Kindness customer relationship initiative, and an employee recognition program.

In the years leading to his work in metro Detroit, Turnbull spent 10 years at three different east coast colleges and universities working in athletic administration as well as a brief stint with SME, a boutique brand agency in New York City.

Turnbull has a bachelor's degree in marketing from Siena College and a master's degree in sports management from the University of Connecticut. He lives in Lake Orion, Mich., with his wife, Carol, and has three grown children.
