Joseph M. Leccese is the Chairman of Proskauer, leading the Firm’s global operations across its 13 offices. He also is the co-head of Proskauer’s renowned Sports Law Group and has been widely recognized as one of the preeminent corporate sports lawyers in the U.S.
Joe has a broad-based corporate practice with a focus on the representation of professional sports leagues, teams and owners; college conferences; media and marketing companies; and private equity firms and financial institutions. Joe advises the premier organizations in sports on their most critical and complex matters, including the National Basketball Association, National Hockey League, Major League Soccer, PAC-12 Conference, Big East Conference, ATP World Tour, WTA Tour, USGA and NASCAR, as well as numerous teams and owners.
Joe regularly handles matters related to the acquisition, financing, operation and equity funding of professional sports teams, including the recent $2.275 billion sale of the Carolina Panthers. He has advised sports leagues, governing bodies and asset managers on more than 100 M&A transactions over the past 30 years.
In addition to his transactional work, Joe advises sports leagues on the granting of expansion franchises and represents leagues, teams and lenders in stadium and arena deals and financings. He regularly works on matters that are at the cutting edge of sports, from domestic and cross-border joint ventures to the commercialization of new media and technology rights.
Joe is a frequent speaker and lecturer on sports business and legal topics, and he often appears on lists of the most powerful and influential people in sports.
