Dr. M. Grace Calhoun is in her fourth year as the Director of Athletics and Recreation at the University of Pennsylvania. Calhoun leads Penn’s 33 varsity athletics programs, nearly 40 club programs, and intramural and recreational offerings for the University.
Calhoun’s first three years at Penn have been highlighted by 13 Ivy League or conference championships by nine different sports and two individual NCAA titles. In addition, Penn has had 56 All-Americans, 120 individual NCAA Championship qualifiers, 11 Coaches of the Year, 15 Ivy League Players of the Year, 49 Ivy League individual champions, 103 first-team All-Ivy selections and a Rhodes Scholar.
Calhoun was named the Division I FCS Administrator of the Year by the Women Leaders in College Sports (formerly NACWAA) and was appointed to the NCAA Division I Council in 2017.
Calhoun arrived at Penn from Loyola University Chicago, where she was Director of Athletics and Assistant Vice President for three years. Prior to Loyola, Calhoun served for six years as Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator at Indiana University.
Winner of the 2009 Nell Jackson Administrator of the Year Award from the Women Leaders in College Sports, Calhoun has Ivy League experience as both a student-athlete and administrator. She graduated from Brown University with a degree in electrical engineering, where she competed in track and field, and was the Associate Athletic Director for Administration and Compliance at Dartmouth for three years. She served in leadership roles at Saint Francis University, the University of Florida and the Patriot League.
In addition to her bachelor's degree, Calhoun earned master's degrees from the University of Florida and Lehigh and a Ph.D. in higher education administration from Florida.
Calhoun and her husband Jason have four daughters: Alexandra, Madeline, Eleanor and MaryKate.
