The PWHL matchup between Montreal and Toronto on Saturday drew a sold-out crowd of 21,105 to the Bell Centre, marking the largest attendance ever recorded for women’s hockey game worldwide. The previous attendance record was 19,285 set by the PWHL on Feb. 16 at Scotiabank Arena. This is the sixth time the PWHL has set an attendance record since launching on Jan. 1, and five of those games involved Montreal (PWHL).
A previous attendance record of 18,013 set at the 2013 women’s world championship in Ottawa had “stood for a decade” before the PWHL broke it. At Saturday's game, fans of all ages “waved white towels, wore flashing bracelets and roared from the top of their lungs" (CP, 4/20). This was “more than just a hockey game.” It was a “celebration for women’s sports” (MONTREAL GAZETTE, 4/20). The league has broken several attendance records in its inaugural season. Saturday’s game “wasn’t originally scheduled to be played at the Bell Centre” (THE ATHLETIC, 4/20).
